Do you know as a business owner it’s against the law to refuse entry or service to a disabled person with a service animal? This includes restaurants, shops, hotels and public transportation. In Florida, it’s illegal to deny entry or service to a disabled person with a service animal. While service animals are allowed to enter public places, generally they are required to be on a leash and always under the control of their owners.
Under Florida law, a service animal is defined as a dog that has a set of skills that is trained to mitigate the challenges of the disability for an individual. The crime deterrent effect of an animal’s presence with the provision of emotional support is not considered a service animal task. Emotional support, companionship, all dogs give that but that does not qualify as a service animal.
We are honored to work with our local service animal providers in order to educate the public about the role that these wonderful animals play for their owners. Let’s work together so we can all understand the law and understand the amazing work that these amazing dogs do for their disabled individuals!
