On June 18, 2014 at approximately 4:45 p.m., while on routine patrol, Officer Dominic Harris and Officer Steven Fergus observed several women on the side of the road holding a 11-month old baby upside down at 1645 21st Street in Sarasota.
When Officer Harris made contact with the women, they said the baby was choking on a chicken bone. Officer Harris rushed and grabbed the baby and started the infant Heimlich to dislodge the bone from the baby's throat while Officer Fergus rushed to radio to dispatch. The baby started breathing but not well so Officer Harris continued the infant Heimlich until rescue arrived.
The baby was taken to the hospital and rushed to surgery. The Sarasota Police Department has learned the baby is expected to make a full recovery but has been transported to All Children's Hospital and was there as of July 2, 2014.
